Learning Targets:
- I can find a 100 mile radius of my school.
- I can determine what food products are grown within that radius.
- I can use GoogleEarth to measure the distance produce in my local grocery travels from farm to store.
- I compare the ecological foot print of produce grown locally to produce transported from other parts of the world.
Activities:
The 100 Mile Diet: Students will use math and research to determine the impact our consumer food choices have on the environment and our local culture. Students will share local dishes, complete a database listing foods grown in their area and then take a trip to a grocery store to find out how for produce travels to reach the store. Students will pick 5 items to represent on a GoogleEarth map. Students will compare the value of foods grown locally vs. foods that travel great distances to get to their table.
